Cala Millor: arrive, unwind
When the name of a place means "best bay" and it has almost 1,800 metres of beach, you're guaranteed plenty of recreational fun. For families with kids anyway, Cala Millor on the east coast of Majorca is one of the island's most popular summer holiday hotspots. The adults can enjoy themselves in Cala Millor too, as there are plenty of restaurants and bars and a few discos. And if the young lads and lasses want to party even more, they can sail over to Cala Rajada about 17 kilometres away. Party boats ensure that the journey is fairly entertaining.
01One beach , four sections
The absolute highlight in Cala Millor is its long beach that gently slopes into the shallow water. Platja de Cala Millor is divided into four beach sections with subtle differences: Arenal de Son Servera, Platja de Sant Llorenç, Son Moro/Estanyol d'en Roig and Cala Nau. This is also because Cala Millor belongs to two municipalities; the northern part comes under Son Servera and the southern part belongs to Sant Llorenç des Cardassar. The beach at Cala Millor boasts a Blue Flag and it is accessible for those with reduced mobility. There are lifeguards and first-aid stations on the spot. And in Cala Millor, water sports enthusiasts can look forward to snorkelling, sailing, diving, surfing, jet-skiing and kayaking trips.
All aboard the mini-train! The "MiniTrenet" tootles from Cala Millor to S'Illot, passing through Sa Coma. The trip is very much oriented towards tourists but lots of kids really love it.
02Seafront promenade
Shops of all kinds , from swimwear shops to boutiques to souvenir shops , beckon you to go strolling and shopping on the seafront promenade. During the warm months, this is the promenade par excellence in Cala Millor, at any time of the day or night. Promenade number two is Paseo Cristòfol Colom. The pedestrian area, which is a little outdated, is now due to be completely modernised.
03All the way along the coast
Why not leap onto a bike and pedal your way along the entire seafront promenade on the cycle path? There are bicycles for hire all over the place. The palm trees amicably wave their leaves at you as you cycle past. If you feel like a little break, you can find an ideal place to stop in one of the cafés and restaurants on the way. By the way, you can get to the Castell de sa Punta de n'Amer in no time. This castle is located on the rocky headland of the same name, which is actually a nature reserve. The old watchtower is accessible and it has a drawbridge, a cannon and a small exhibition inside. Here, just head up the stairs and you'll have a clear view of the beach of Cala Millor and of S'Illot.
04Monkeys on the horizon
Gazelles, gnus, giraffes, elephants, zebras, flamingos and nimble monkeys that curiously approach every vehicle , the outdoor enclosure at the Safari Zoo in Cala Millor is home to around 600 animals. This is a combination of wildlife park and leisure park that features safari drives, feeding of animals, playgrounds and restaurants.
If you'd sooner be on the putting green and tracking down golf balls rather than exotic animals, you have the golf course Canyamel Golf 13 kilometres away. Cala Millor is about 70 kilometres from Palma's Son Sant Joan Airport, but you could very well take advantage of this as a sightseeing trip, as the route from the airport runs from west to east right across the island. If you were thinking of buying a property in Majorca, you could use this opportunity to be on the lookout for your favourite place.
