Coll d'en Rabassa
Coll d'en Rabassa , with the airport next door
Coll d'en Rabassa has an important neighbour, namely Son Sant Joan Airport. If you're a frequent flyer, this south-east district of Palma may thus be an interesting location for a property in Majorca , as long as you're not bothered by the aircraft taking off and landing. And Cala Gamba gives you a beach for bathing right on the doorstep. Just outside the door also is the Club Náutico Cala Gamba marina, which provides more than 200 moorings. You can get to the Majorcan capital in a flash by car or city bus, as it's not even six kilometres away. The lively city centre has a wide-ranging cultural scene and Palma also has international schools for the young ones. And not least because Coll d'en Rabassa has its own motorway access onto the Ma-19 (called the Autopista de Levante), there's nothing whatsoever to stop you exploring the whole island from here.
01Corner shops and shopping centre
Coll d'en Rabassa is still an authentic neighbourhood in Palma , with the 1885 church of "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" and small, typical Majorcan shops in the centre. They are complemented by the Fan Mallorca Shopping complex, which has numerous shops and includes a cinema and restaurants. The French supermarket chain Carrefour can also be found here, with its vast assortment of goods , from foodstuffs to clothing to electrical appliances.
On a little rocky outcrop sits the simple Restaurant El Peñón from 1957. It has remained steadfastly true to its style and, in this spectacular location, serves various paellas and, most notably, fish and seafood at reasonable prices.
02Hospital with a sea view
Coll d'en Rabassa offers a special amenity with the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, which has an orthopaedic surgery unit, a trauma unit and a geriatric unit available for those who need them. It is also the only hospital in the Balearic Islands specialising in rehabilitation for spinal cord injuries. Services are offered both to patients from the Spanish public health system and private patients, such as those from abroad who live in Majorca or have a second residence here. Some of the rooms have a sea view.
03Stones for the cathedral
The stony stretch of shoreline called Es Carnatge also belongs to Coll d'en Rabassa. Nowadays it's a natural area and a habitat for an array of endemic plants. Many hundreds of years ago, it was used as a quarry for the building materials to construct the impressive Gothic cathedral La Seu in Palma. If you look closely, you can still detect where the boulders were once knocked out from the rock.
