Es Llombards

Es Llombards , close to nature

In the sunny south of Majorca, you'll find the little village of Es Llombards situated between Santanyí and Ses Salines, and some four kilometres from the sea. This is a small, secluded world apart that remains authentic. It has only around 550 inhabitants and they're really fortunate, because Es Llombards is the perfect starting point for going beach hopping. You could start with a visit to Es Llombards' own bay , Cala Llombards.

There are also plenty of other beaches that you can reach in no time. Among them are Caló d'es Moro, the idyllic bays of Cala Mondragó and S'Amarador in Mondragó Natural Park , and the famous long beach of Es Trenc. Trips to the fishing village of Cala Figuera and the beautiful centre of Santanyí are also well worth your while, as is a little trip over to Colònia de Sant Jordi, where you can amble along the promenade...perhaps stop off in one of the restaurants and spoil yourself with some Mediterranean gourmet foods and wines.

The rural environment surrounding Es Llombards is also really attractive for cycling and hiking. And the capital city of Palma de Mallorca is 53 kilometres away. Agriculture is of great importance in this region and so the scenery is characterised by pastures and arable farmland.

It's hardly surprising then that one of the few Majorcan cheese dairies, a traditional enterprise called Quesos Grimalt, is located in Es Llombards. This company sells angular loaves of cheese with rounded corners made from pasteurised cow's milk and it comes in young, semi-mature and mature versions. The rind of each cheese loaf is repeatedly rubbed with olive oil by hand, giving the outer skin a rich colour.

Being a local speciality, the cheese can of course also be found at the weekly market in Es Llombards. This is held every Thursday morning in Plaça des Pou, right in the heart of the village. You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the neighbouring farmers here too, as well as handicrafts. Bordering the square, you'll find a bakery and restaurants , and the Parròquia de la Immaculada Concepció church is only a minute away. A texbook example of rural Majorca! Typical village festivals are part of life here, such as the Fiestas de Santo Domingo during the first week in August and the festivities to celebrate the Immaculada Concepció (the Immaculate Conception) in December.

Here in the quiet Mediterranean environment of Es Llombards, many foreigners have chosen not just to spend holidays in a rented chalet or finca, but to buy a property of their own. That's understandable because not only is Es Llombards set in an idyllic location...thanks to the well-developed road network and the bus services, the village is completely connected to the rest of the Majorcan world.

And as golfers may anticipate, they can tee off on an 18-hole course, 18 kilometres away in Vall d'Or Golf.
