Cosy Estellencs

The placid village of Estellencs clings to the west coast of Majorca. You get to the village via the winding MA-10 coastal road that connects Andratx with Sóller, and of course the other way round. Regardless of whether you're driving south to north or north to south , it's an amazing route for anyone with petrol in their blood! Likewise for anyone with a romantic spirit. Wind down the windows and breathe in the pine-scented sea air , what a great mix! It literally becomes picture-perfect as it starts to get dark. As sunset draws near, it's simply indescribable. In short, the MA-10 is one of a number of Majorca's special scenic roads.

And then you get to Estellencs, the storybook village of 300 inhabitants. To some extent, time has stood still here. The church of Sant Joan Baptista is from the 17th century and the mighty defence tower dates back to the Middle Ages. From the raised terrace of the Restaurant Montimar (meaning mountains and sea) on Plaça Constitució right on the "main street", you have a view of the church while you savour the Majorcan cuisine.

The tables stand at a bit of a slant on the slightly sloping ground. The friendly hosts try to level them as much as possible, and it more or less works. That's all part of life in a mountain village. Simply part of its rustic charm. As long as the Majorcan roast suckling pig, rabbit pâté and stuffed aubergines don't slide off the plate, it's all good. Of course you could always take a break with a "cortado" coffee in the Bar Sa Tanca on Carrer del Mar street, get closer to the locals and experience the pure village atmosphere.

By the way, you always feel that atmosphere particularly strongly on 1st May, when the village invites everyone to visit the "Fira del Vi i del Formatge" , the wine and cheese fair. This traditional festival is centred around wine and cheese tasting. But prepare to be surprised by all of the other local specialities also on offer. You can find homemade jams, freshly squeezed orange juice and olives of all kinds. Naturally, you'll also come across the typical Malvasia white wine of Majorca. Oh, to own a property here , what a place to live!

In summer, you'll also have the joy of swimming in Estellencs. Before plunging into the crystal clear waters, however, you need to walk the two kilometres or so to the cove, Cala Estellencs. It's well worth the effort! Once you've arrived down at the pebbly cove, you'll actually never want to leave it again , at least, not that day. And who says you have to! There in the "chiringuito" or beach bar, you can have a bite to eat under the straw roof, gazing dreamily at the boathouses and sea, and soaking up the whole picture-postcard scene. Estellencs is simply relaxing. Stress...what was that again??
