Marratxí
Exciting contrasts in Marratxí
There is no town called Marratxí , but there is a municipality! The "municipio" has five localities: Portòl, Pont d'Inca, Sa Cabaneta, Pla de Na Tesa and Marratxínet. Together, they make up Marratxí. This municipality is located between Palma de Mallorca, Bunyola and Santa Maria del Camí and rates among the Top Ten of the 53 Majorcan municipalities in terms of inhabitants. It lies in sixth place with almost 38,000 citizens.
01Portòl pottery village
Marratxí is full of exciting contrasts. Each of the five main areas has its own special features and delightful peculiarities. Portòl is the pottery village. Fans of ceramics make pilgrimages here from all over the island in March every year for the Fira del Fang. The fair is a chance each year for local and external pottery workshops to show what they can magically create from fired clay. Their collections are impressive. You can find traditional terracotta vessels as well as very modern crockery, gleaming in bright colours. Even when the fair isn't on, it's really worth having a look at the potters' workshops in Portòl.
02Brandy and perfume from Marratxí
Meanwhile in Pont d'Inca, which borders right on the Majorcan capital of Palma, they have been producing the finest of brandy for more than 170 years. In the Bodega Suau, the spirits based on white grapes spend years or even decades in potbellied wooden barrels, maturing into really good brandies. Pont d'Inca also produces the classic Majorcan perfume Flor d'Ametler, which comes with a delicate almond blossom in each bottle. In every way, this factory captures the almond-flower scent of Majorca for its perfume. Airport enthusiasts will be interested to know that the municipal area also contains Son Bonet Airport, and it's in Pont d'Inca too. This served as Majorca's main airport until Son Sant Joan International Airport opened in 1960.
03Shopping heaven: Mallorca Fashion Outlet
This municipality also has an outlet centre that guarantees you a great shopping experience. For bargain hunters, just the word "Marratxí" makes their hearts leap. At this large Mallorca Fashion Outlet off the Palma, Inca motorway, you'll not only find sportswear, fashion and footwear with numerous prestigious lifestyle brands at reduced prices; you can also spend some leisure time while you're here, as the centre boasts restaurants, cafés and a cinema. In case you still have the shopping bug after that, you can sort out any other bits and pieces in the all-round shopping centre, Alcampo, which is also just off the Ma-13 motorway.
04Adiós to the hubbub, recharge at the convent
In contrast, a great place to enjoy tranquillity and space rather than hustle and bustle is in the hamlet of Marratxínet. Here, you can find a former Franciscan order convent, where nuns led their modest life right up until 2014 , and today, it is a hotel: the Asís de Marratxínet. The rooms, some called Francisca, Ángels and Maria, for example, after nuns from the order, are unpretentious and simple in the convent style , an oasis where you can recharge your batteries, far away from the hectic pace of life.
05Properties in a quiet residential area
Meanwhile, Pla de Na Tesa has quite a commercial character and Sa Cabaneta, with its beautiful church of Sant Marçal, is a rural residential area without many tourists. Because of the elevated location, some of the properties here have a sea view! And the area is in great demand with foreigners who want to make a home in Majorca... because living in Sa Cabaneta means a comfortable life in a home in the countryside while, at the same time, being close to the vibrant city of Palma with its wide variety of cultural and gastronomic options on offer. You can reach the Balearic city via the motorway in half an hour , so you can soon quench your thirst for action and entertainment. And you have train and bus services available as well. Many choose to work in Palma and live in their villas or apartments in the municipality of Marratxí.
